What exactly is High-Input, Low-Output?
It’s our antidote to busy work. We focus entirely on imparting knowledge through discussion and lectures (high-input) while keeping homework and assignments to a minimum (low-output).
How does this differ from typical online courses?
Most online classes grade heavily on written output. At Moth, we prioritize learning over busy work. Since homework is limited, we do not assign grades, allowing families the freedom to evaluate progress in a manner that suits their homeschool style.
Is there any work for students?
Low-output does not mean no output. Teachers assign a variety of weekly assignments including reading, videos to watch, music to listen to, short written responses, and usually one or two major projects over the course of the year. The workload will vary from course to course but overall it is very manageable and free of busy work.
Who is this learning style for?
It is perfect for all sorts of students who want to take interesting, engaging courses that fit into their schedule. Our format is great for gifted learners, learners with disabilities, and anyone else looking for balance in their teen’s schedule.
Is there a student who might not be right for Moth?
Students who do not learn well through live discussions or who are hesitant to participate in a robust discussion may not enjoy Moth. Others who like weekly work and feedback may also not appreciate our format.

Who is behind Moth Learning?
Moth was founded by Jill Harper, a veteran homeschooler and college counselor at Simplify Homeschooling. Jill recognized a need for rigorous, engaging courses that didn’t burn students out, so she built Moth to fill that gap.
Who are the teachers?
We hire subject-matter experts—many of whom have earned or are working toward Master’s degrees. Crucially, many of our instructors were homeschooled themselves or are parents of homeschoolers, so they inherently understand the flexibility and unique needs of homeschool families.

How are teens involved in the process?
We don’t just teach teens; we welcome them into our community. Moth offers non-paid positions for Teaching Assistants (TAs), student-led clubs, and internships. Supporting our homeschooled teens to be active participants in our community is a core value here at Moth and one that serves students well as they move on to the next stage in life.
Is this a religious or secular program?
We are a secular program welcoming students of all backgrounds.
Are teachers available outside of the scheduled meeting times?
Yes, all teachers are available for email support, and many offer office hours for students.

Do teachers provide letters of recommendation for students?
Yes, we understand how important this is for students when they apply for college and are happy to provide letters of recommendation. We encourage students to reach out to teachers at the end of junior year.
Do teachers provide grades for students?
While we do not assign letter grades, we provide an end-of-year report featuring feedback and guidance for parents to use in their own evaluations. Additionally, all families receive a detailed course description for their student’s records.
What about course descriptions?
Jill counsels homeschoolers on the college application process at Simplify Homeschool. She understands what is needed from families when it is time to apply to colleges. Because of this, Moth requires all teachers to provide families with a course description at the end of the year. If you have a senior applying to schools, email your teacher to ask for the course description at the start of the school year.

What is Moth Learning’s Refund Policy?
