Photography: Technique, Vision, Voice

Instructor: Rebecca Boxwell

Description:

Welcome to Photography: Technique, Vision, Voice! This live, year long course for students 14 and up introduces photography as both a technical craft and a powerful form of personal expression. The first semester focuses on building strong foundational skills, including understanding how to create a well-exposed image, using shutter speed and aperture intentionally, recognizing types of light, and utilizing principles of composition. The second semester shifts towards developing visual literacy and personal creative vision. Students will learn about photographic movements and key photographers, color theory, the role of photography in culture, the influence of AI, and how to hone their artistic style. By the end of the course, students will know how to take skillful photos, understand why images matter, and be able to create work that is meaningful to them.

Classes are a combination of lecture, discussion, and guided image critique. Students will regularly share their photographs for group discussion and feedback. The class environment will be supportive, encouraging, and focused on helping everyone grow.

Outside of class, students will be taking photographs to practice the skills they are learning. Weekly submissions will include images and brief reflections. There will be one student project per semester, with the final project being a portfolio of their curated work.

Note: While a camera with adjustable settings is recommended, students can successfully take this course using any camera, including a phone
