Queer Studies Through Graphic Novels

Instructor: Jill Harper,

Description:

Course Description:

Do you love visual storytelling? Are you interested in how identity, history, and culture intersect in the world? Then this book club is for you. We will be reading a variety of graphic novels and analyzing them through a queer lens.

Each month, we’ll dive into a different graphic novel, exploring how the authors use art and dialogue to express complex identities. This club also includes a “Queer Studies” component. We will pair every story with a short selection from the illustrated theory book Queer: A Graphic History by Dr. Meg-John Barker.

Students are required to read the assigned graphic novel prior to our monthly meeting, pose a question to the group, and share their opinions with their peers. This book club is a safe space and teens ages 15+ are welcome.
